Making gold from Honor points and PvP in The War Within
The War Within update
The War Within offers many good ways to earn gold from PvP, so if you enjoy player vs. player battles and want to make some extra gold, here are some tips.
If you play a lot of battlegrounds and arenas, you tend to accumulate a lot of excess currency such as Honor points and Mark of Honor, which can then be “converted” to gold by purchasing certain items that you can sell to other players, most commonly on the Auction House.
Of course, you should first spend Honor points and Marks of Honor on buying equipment, weapons and useful stuff for your character, but any excess that you have can then be used to make gold.
Buying recipes and items with Honor points (TWW)
One of the best methods I’ve found to make gold from PvP right now is to purchase various recipes and items with Honor points. They can be purchased from Hotharn in Dornogal. These items can then be listed on the Auction House.
A very lucrative item is Vicious Bloodstone. These can be bought for only 2500 Honor, and can be sold for roughly 9000 gold right now, and they sell very well because players need these to add sockets to PvP items.
Hotharn also sells numerous recipes for many professions. These cost 7500 Honor each. If you have crafting professions, you can first buy the recipes you want, then you can buy other recipes and sell them on the auction house.
Of course, you can also buy and learn the recipes for your crafting profession(s), if any, and sell the crafted gear on the auction house, but that’s not the focus here. We’re simply talking about selling the recipes themselves on the auction house.
The recipes vary enormously in price on the auction house, so you want to make sure you buy a recipe that can be sold for a lot of gold. This needs to be chosen carefully beforehand, because some recipes may only be worth 1000-2000 gold or so, while others can literally go for 50K gold or more! If you just buy a random recipe you might be disappointed to find that it’s not all that valuable on the auction house. Therefore, you want to check the price on the auction house first, and only then buy a recipe that can be sold expensively.
In order to GREATLY simplify the process of finding the most valuable recipes, I recommend downloading the Auctionator addon, which can scan the entire auction house and show you the current auction price for an item in your tooltips. That way, you can know what each item is worth on the auction house even when you’re not there. This makes it far easier to buy a recipe that is currently selling for a lot of gold. Just make sure that you go to the auction house and “scan” it with Auctionator right before you buy any recipe, so you have the most recent pricing data, as this will change over time.

Buying glider kits and potions with Marks of Honor (TWW)
You can earn Mark of Honor by winning Battlegrounds etc. and these can then be used to purchase items that you can sell on the auction house.
On the Alliance side, you can buy Alliance Glider Kit, while on the Horde side you can buy Horde Glider Kit. Three Mark of Honor can be used to buy 5 glider kits. These can usually be sold for more than 10 gold each on the auction house, but I have been able to occasionally sell them for 150 gold each, and even 700 gold each one time!
Other items that you can for 1 Mark of Honor each include Saltwater Potion and “Third Wind” Potion. These can usually be sold for around 5-10 gold each, but it’s typically a better deal to buy the glider kits mentioned above, unless you can sell the potions for around 20 gold each.
There are also other potions you can buy for Marks of Honor and sell to other players, but they are worth far less.
The vendors that sell the glider kits and potions can be found in Alterac Valley, Wintergrasp, at the preparation phase before the battle begins. They can also be found in some other normal (non-Epic) Battlegrounds.
If you want more Marks of Honor, you can buy Algari Distinguishment from Velerd in Dornogal. These cost 2000 honor and contain 5 Marks of Honor, which you can then use to buy glider kits etc. to sell. However, there are better opportunities to spend your honor that can give you a lot more gold.
Earning more Honor points
The more Honor you earn, the more gold you can make – and it also gives you higher Honor Levels – so here are some tips to earn more Honor.
- Ruffious in Dornogal will give you a quest every week to earn Honor in random battlegrounds/arenas/epic battlegrounds etc., for example the quest Preserving in Battle. You can do this quest and turn it in for extra honor.
- Do the quest A Call To Battle which is sometimes available. This gives you five extra Mark of Honor and other rewards.
- Do the quest The Arena Calls if you like arenas. The quest is available sometimes.
- Win the weekly Brawl at least one time per week to complete the quest Something Different. This quest should pop up automatically when you enter the Brawl, which is available through the Group Finder -> Player vs. Player tab.
- You can buy Vicious Flask of the Wrecking Ball, Vicious Flask of Honor or Vicious Flask of Classical Spirits on the auction house, which will give you 15% more honor. You can consume 2 at the same time, which stack up to 2 hours in duration, but not longer. These do cost gold, but may be worth it if you can earn even more gold from the extra Honor points.
The Burning Crusade method
Difficulty: Beginner
Approximate Earnings: Several hundred gold per hour.
Time Spent: Dependent on time spent PvPing and amount of excess honor points.
How To: Honor Point accumulation caps at 4000. Once you have purchased all the gear and weapons you want for your character, spend your extra points on an item called the “Brutal Gladiator’s Shiv”. This item is only 105 honor and sells at the vendors for nearly 16 gold. If you are sitting on a full cache of honor points this will equate to about 600 additional gold. It is fairly easy to accumulate honor points quickly by doing the daily battleground and participating in honor weekends, where certain battlegrounds will award additional honor for your attendance. There is a 2 hour waiting period before you can successfully sell any PvP item to a vendor for its gold value. The absence of the blue “refund” text at the bottom of the item tooltip will help you know when it is fine to vendor.
