Here’s a list of some of the best gold farming spots I’ve discovered in WoW Wrath of the Lich King.
1. Chunk o’ Mammoth farming in Sholazar Basin
This place is just a gold mine. The mobs you want to farm are Shattertusk Bulls, Shattertusk Calf and Shattertusk Mammoth.
These drop the specialty meat Chunk o’ Mammoth which is used in some high-end cooking recipes and sells for 1-3g per piece. They also drop a fair amount of grey items and the occasional uncommon/green armor or weapon, which can be vendored or disenchanted. Finally, they can be skinned by skinners.
But it doesn’t stop there. Around this area there are also several saronite nodes for miners, gas clouds for engineers and herbs for herbalists.
The mobs are only level 76-77 so can be farmed quickly at level 80. There are 2 packs of mammoths wandering around that can be AoE’d if you have the ability.
All in all, a very good WotLK gold farming spot.
I also used mining & engineering to farm the odd saronite node and gas cloud.
Here’s what I ended up with in just 20 minutes with mining & engineering:
Item | Quantity | Gold |
Grey items | 24g | |
Chunk o’ Mammoth | 65 | |
Uncommon (green) armor/weapons | 32.78g worth | |
Crystallized Shadow | 3 | |
Crystallized Water | 3 | |
Crystallized Fire | 15 | |
Saronite Ore | 10 | |
Crystallized Earth | 3 | |
Chilled Meat | 21 |
Selling the above would easily be worth 150-200g if not more on most realms, making the total for an hour of farming 450-600+ gold. That’s how profitable this spot is. FYI, I sell the Chunk o’ Mammoth in stacks of 5.
2. Rhino Meat Farming in Borean Tundra
Another meat farming spot, this time rhino meat. The mobs you’re targeting are Wooly Rhino Bulls, Wooly Rhino Calf, and Wooly Rhino Matriarch. You’ll find them in packs of 5-6, great for AoE farming, and they’re only level 65-69 so any level 80 will have a field day here.
I can comfortably farm 400 rhino meat per hour here, plus some vendor trash and chilled meat. The rhino meat can be effectively sold in stacks of 5.
If you consistently wait until there’s a shortage of this item on the AH, you can probably sell for 2g per piece, which comes out to 800+ gold per hour under good circumstances.
Not bad, eh?
3. Farming Eternals in Wintergrasp
Another way to earn some quick gold, is to go to our beloved PvP zone; Wintergrasp. There are several ways to earn gold even here.
One of them is by farming Crystallized Life from the Mature and Living Lashers. These mobs are skinnable with herbalism for some extra herbs and life.
Here’s what I got in 30 minutes. Results may vary.
Item |
Action |
Gold |
Grey items | Vendored | 32g 53s 77c |
Sparkling Frostcap (22) | Vendored | 1g 76s |
Eternal Life (9) | Auctioned | 149g 20s |
Green (uncommon) gear (2) | Disenchanted, auctioned | 24g 70s |
Blue/rare item | Vendored | 9g 20s 51c |
Goldclover (9) | Auctioned | 9g |
Adder’s Tongue (5) | Auctioned | 13g |
Talandra’s Rose(2 ) | Auctioned | 2g |
Icethorn (4 ) | Auctioned | 3g 10s |
Lichbloom (5) | Auctioned | 8g 50s |
Tiger Lily (3 ) | Auctioned | 1g 50s |
Total in 30 minutes | 255g in 30 min (510 g per hour) |
This means that you can earn over 500g per hour or farming, or 1000g by killing and herbing mobs per your faction’s turn to control Wintergrasp.
When your faction controls Wintergrasp, but there is no on-going battle, you’ll see the following types of mobs which have a guaranteed drop of their respective elemental type. In other words, it’s much more profitable to farm in WG when your faction controls it, so you get these bonus mobs.
Air – Tempest Revenant
Earth – Earthbound Revenant
Fire – Flame Revenant
Life – Mature Lasher
Water – Water Revenant
Shadow – Shadow Revenant
4. Farming Wailing Winds in Storm Peaks
Another great place for Eternal Fire would be a small cave in Storm Peaks. The mobs, Wailing Winds, have a quick respawn rate, and the cave is small, so there will be new mobs every time you run back and forth. They also have a very low healthpool. The only downside is their charge that stuns you for a couple of seconds if you engage far away from it.
20 minutes:
Item | Action | Gold |
Grey items | Vendored | 21g82s43c |
Green/uncommon gear (2) | Disenchanted, auctioned | 38g |
Eternal Fire (4) | Auctioned | 87g40s |
Total in 20 minutes | 138g 22s 43c (414g per hour) |
5. Mining Fel Iron Ore in Hellfire Peninsula
Even though Fel Iron belongs to TBC, Hellfire Peninsula is still a noteworthy zone for those who want to make some quick gold. The ore sells extremely well, because people still skill up Engineering, Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting, which leads to a high demand of this.
Make sure you have an epic flyer for this to work well. Here’s what I ended up with in 20 minutes. If your realm also allows for these ridiculous overprices on fel iron ore, try this route out.
Item | Gold |
Fel Iron Ore (78) | 166g70s |
Primal Earth (0.6) | 1g70s |
Primal Fire (1.6) | 28g90s |
Total: | 197g 30s or 592g per hour |
